Flying H produces single-estate wines cultivated in our vineyards in the Monterey AVA

Sustainability

We strive to protect the natural environment by conserving and using sustainable practices since the first vines were planted in the 1980s. This includes soil conservation (grapes use drip irrigation which reduces erosion), water and energy conservation (less water and less pumping power, less electricity than row crops), less tractor work (less diesel emission and dust), and less crop rotation (grapes are a long term crop – 20 years or more).

We are proud our Flying H Wine Vineyards are part of the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance ensuring only the highest quality of grapes, sustainably grown, in your glass.

Our Legacy

The seeds for Hobson Family Farms were planted when Illinois native William Dewey ‘W.D.’ Hobson ventured west during the goldrush. Landing first in northern California, he wrote home about his love for “Lower California” and Isabelle Winemiller, his soon-to-be wife.

W.D. Hobson started in construction and cattle trading. Soon there was a successful beef packinghouse and butcher shops in addition to the building and real estate business. Initially running cattle from local ranches, he began to acquire ranches of his own, and the “Flying H” brand was born. In 1917, the eldest son, Abram, along with a couple of other local farmers journeyed to King City in Monterey County where they bought farmland which was used for row crops, orchards and later vineyards. In the 1990s, the fifth generation acquired more land in the area and added additional vineyards.

We currently farm 3,000 sustainable acres and from the millions of vines we grow, we select and hand-harvest only the finest grapes for our “Flying H” Label.

The Wine

Flying H produces award winning single-estate wines cultivated in our vineyards in the Monterey AVA. We sustainably farm thousands of acres and provide grapes to numerous, well-known California wineries. From the millions of vines we grow, we hand-select only the finest grapes for our own Flying H label.  After the harvest, our innovative winemaking partner Ernst Storm shepherds the fermenting, aging, and bottling to create our signature offerings.

Vineyards

Beneath Monterey Bay to the Salinas Valley is a submarine canyon 60 miles long and 2 miles wide. This deepwater canyon keeps coastal temperatures low and produces the evening fog, providing an oceanographic phenomenon that creates a natural air conditioning for the grapes. In addition to the ‘Blue Canyon” benefits, reliable afternoon breezes alleviate disease pressure on vines and coastal fog help keep things cool in the summer afternoons further aiding in the longer hang times and flavor component developments.
Rancho Legado vines were planted in 1998. The soil at this site is Lockwood Channery Loam with gentle slopes. The bottom depth of the soil is high in clay content which allows for good soil moisture holding during the summer months and forces the vines to actively look for water during the summer months with moderate supplemental irrigation events. The vines are situated in a direction to take advantage of the early morning sun exposure for a longer hangtime to ensure even ripening.
Kristy Vineyard was planted in 2008. The soil is predominantly Rincon Clay Loam with gentle slopes. The soil profile shows clay layers throughout which allows for good soil retention, thus aiding with abundant moisture available at all times of the year. The vines are planted in a direction to take advantage of the early morning sun and afternoon protection during heat events.

Winemaker

Ernst Storm, originally from South Africa, studied at the country’s acclaimed Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. In the early 2000s, Storm came to California to work at a winery in the Sierra Foothills. He was drawn to the climate that reminded him of home and decided to plant his roots in Santa Barbara County. After 19 years of winemaking, Storm is known for making classical styled wines with personality of vintage and site. In 2021, Hobson Family Farms was introduced to Ernst and his wine making skills and he was introduced to our grapes, it was a perfect blend!
